Dead Rails threw me into a zombie-infested desert with nothing but a shovel and a prayer. I died 47 times before my first successful run. Here’s everything I wish I knew from the start.
What is Dead Rails?
Dead Rails is a cooperative survival game on Roblox where you defend a train traveling through zombie territory. Your goals: keep the train running, loot towns for supplies, and survive until you reach the end of the line.
The game has over 600,000 players and a 93%+ approval rating. It’s genuinely one of the best survival experiences on Roblox.
Core Mechanics
The Train
Your train is your lifeline. It needs:
- Coal to keep moving (find in buildings, buy at stores)
- Repairs when damaged by enemies
- Barricades to block zombie entry points
If the train runs out of coal, you’re stranded. If zombies breach the train, everyone inside is in danger.
Bonds Currency
Bonds are the persistent currency that carries between runs. Use them to:
- Unlock new classes at the Tailor shop
- Buy weapons and upgrades
- Access premium content
You earn Bonds by completing runs, killing enemies, and finding loot.
Day/Night Cycle
Daytime is relatively safe. Nighttime is when things get dangerous:
- More zombies spawn
- Vampires and werewolves appear
- Visibility drops significantly
- Some class abilities change (Vampire gets stronger)
Plan your looting around the day/night cycle. Get back to the train before dark if you’re not prepared.
Survival Basics
First 5 Minutes
When you spawn:
- Grab your starting gear (depends on class)
- Check the train’s coal level - add coal if low
- Set up basic barricades on entry points
- Wait for the train to stop at the first town
- Loot quickly and efficiently
Looting Strategy
When the train stops at a town:
Priority items:
- Weapons and ammo (survival)
- Coal (keeps train moving)
- Medical supplies (bandages, snake oil)
- Money bags (buy better gear)
Looting tips:
- Split up with teammates to cover more ground
- Check every building, including upstairs
- Listen for the train whistle - it means time to leave
- Don’t get greedy - a missed train means death
Barricading
Barricades block zombie entry points on the train:
| Material | Durability | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| Newspaper | Low | Common, everywhere |
| Wooden Planks | Medium | Buildings, stores |
| Sheet Metal | High | Rare, expensive |
| Barbed Wire | Damages enemies | Stores, loot |
Barricade priority:
- Main entrances (front and back)
- Windows near the coal storage
- Side doors
Don’t waste sheet metal early. Save it for later waves when zombies hit harder.
Combat Basics
Headshots deal more damage. This is crucial for ammo conservation.
Melee saves ammo. Use your shovel or knife for single zombies. Save guns for groups.
Kiting works. Zombies are slow. Walk backwards while attacking to avoid damage.
Don’t fight werewolves alone. They’re fast and hit hard. Team up or run.
Enemy Types
Common Enemies
| Enemy | Threat | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Zombie | Low | Headshots, melee works |
| Fast Zombie | Medium | Don’t let them swarm |
| Armored Zombie | Medium | Aim for exposed areas |
| Wolf | Medium | Keep distance, shoot |
Dangerous Enemies
| Enemy | Threat | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Werewolf | High | Team focus fire, don’t melee |
| Vampire | High | Holy water, stay in groups |
| Outlaw | Medium | Ranged combat, use cover |
| Outlaw Boss | Very High | Full team coordination |
Bosses
Bosses spawn during special events or late-game:
- Nikola Tesla - Electric attacks, high health
- Outlaw Leaders - Bring backup outlaws
Focus fire with your team. Don’t try to solo bosses.
Resource Management
Coal Management
The train consumes coal constantly. Running out = game over.
Coal sources:
- Loot from buildings
- Buy at General Store
- Miner class starts with 2 coal
- Conductor class spawns with 2 coal
Tips:
- Always keep 3+ coal in reserve
- Assign one player to coal duty
- Don’t waste coal on unnecessary speed
Ammo Conservation
Ammo is scarce. Every bullet counts.
Conservation tips:
- Headshots deal 2x damage
- Use melee for single enemies
- Don’t spray - aim carefully
- Share ammo with teammates who need it
Health Management
You can’t regenerate health naturally (except Vampire class).
Healing items:
- Bandages (common, small heal)
- Snake Oil (rare, large heal)
- Doctor class can heal teammates
Survival tips:
- Don’t take unnecessary damage
- Save healing items for emergencies
- Stay near Doctor players if possible
Team Coordination
Dead Rails is designed for co-op. Solo is possible but much harder.
Role Distribution
Ideal 4-player team:
- Combat (Cowboy/Vampire) - Kills enemies
- Support (Doctor) - Heals team
- Defense (Alamo/Ironclad) - Protects train
- Utility (Conductor/Miner) - Resources
Communication
Call out:
- Zombie breaches (“Zombies in the back!”)
- Resource needs (“Need ammo!”)
- Loot finds (“Found a rifle in the bank!”)
- Train status (“Coal is low!”)
Reviving
When a teammate goes down:
- Clear nearby enemies first
- Revive takes time - protect the reviver
- Doctor class revives faster
- Don’t let bodies despawn
Town Types
Different towns have different loot:
Regular Towns
- Basic supplies
- Common weapons
- Some coal
Outlaw Camps
- Better weapons
- Outlaws to fight (bounties)
- Risk vs reward
Banks
- Money bags
- Safe combinations (check Discord/Wiki)
- High-value loot
Forts
- Sheriff’s office (turn in bounties)
- General Store
- Gunsmith
Progression Tips
Early Game (Runs 1-10)
- Learn the maps and mechanics
- Stick with None or cheap classes
- Focus on survival, not kills
- Save Bonds for good classes
Mid Game (Runs 10-50)
- Unlock Cowboy or Doctor first
- Learn enemy patterns
- Start attempting full runs
- Experiment with different classes
Late Game (50+ Runs)
- Master your preferred class
- Help newer players
- Attempt challenge modes
- Collect all classes
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring coal - Train stops, everyone dies
- Looting too long - Missing the train
- Wasting ammo - Spraying instead of aiming
- Solo hero plays - Dying alone far from team
- Bad barricade placement - Zombies breach easily
- Fighting werewolves alone - Instant death
- Ignoring the day/night cycle - Caught outside at night
